The Community Health Needs Assessment is actually required of non-profit hospitals. The IRS’ 501(r)(3) requirements lay out those necessary elements that a Community Health Needs Assessment should include, and those are required every three years of every non-profit hospital.

But what we’re seeing recently is that more and more state governments are actually introducing specific legislations to build upon those IRS requirements. The assessment can also truly tell the story of how hospital’s resources are impacting their local communities in more ways than just having a financial assistance policy in place.
